Today is a Good Day

I forgot to mention that these Garden Thoughts would not be posted on any sort of consistent schedule- that’s just not how my creative flow works. I’m not allowed any say on the timing of inspiration. Fear not! For if that is how you roll, rock on! And when you come upon this post, it will be at the time you were ready for it, so in a way, I am posting on your schedule.

You. Are. Welcome.

Today is a Good Day

Some of my fondest childhood memories are from the time we lived in Clarksville, Maryland. My sister and I would spend hours, stretched out on the floor on our bellies, drawing and coloring while listening to songs and stories on cassette tapes. Our favorites were Frog and Toad Are Friends, Snow White, The Fox and the Hound, and Willow.

As time went on, I found that I enjoyed drawing more than coloring. I’d choose a page from a coloring book and draw it on a new piece of paper, then my sister would color it in. Hours and hours. Day after day.

These memories popped into my head while I was watering the garden today, and I found myself grinning. Over the last few months, I’ve had some art requests from Camp John Marc and Cook Children’s with a common theme: Coloring Pages.

So here I am all these years later, drawing coloring pages while listening to the soundtrack from my childhood, reflecting with fondness on memories with my sister.

But as these days are what they are, I’ll adjust the last sentiment in the COVID Age:

So here I am, typing this blog all these years later, about drawing coloring pages while listening to the soundtrack from my childhood, reflecting with fondness on memories with my sister, while our giant pup, Bruno, skids across the backyard patio after diving in the kiddie pool, our old dog snoozes in the kitchen as her journey nears its end very soon, and our former neighbor from 15 years ago who’s also an a/c repairman, attempts to revive our 30-year-old AC unit again (thanks, Colt!), while the fans burst on high in the living room and a mosquito buzzes in my ear.

Today is a good day. Or as my dad puts it: “A good breathing day is a good day.”

A few samples of coloring pages from over the summer.
