Hello Friend. My name is Veronica Kubiak, and I have been drawing and painting since I was a kid. I especially enjoyed taking our family photos off the wall and drawing charcoal portraits. And when I was 10, my mom gave me a set of oil paints for my birthday, and I was hooked (I even got in trouble for leaving fruit arrangements to rot in my room that I’d set up for still life paintings)!
My passion for art inspired the direction of my academic pursuits in college, where I studied drawing and painting, and received my BFA in 2006 from the University of North Texas.
I have been painting murals and commissioned art since 2008 for Camp John Marc, a camp for children with chronic illnesses and physical disabilities and their families, and for Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. I first visited Camp John Marc as a camper in 1995, when my sister was diagnosed with leukemia. We attended Camp Sanguinity, which supports children with cancer and their siblings. She passed away in 1997. Once I was old enough, I volunteered at Cook Children’s Medical Center, where she was treated, and later returned to Camp John Marc to volunteer at Camp Sanguinity. I have continued volunteering at various camps, including Camp MDA for children with muscular dystrophy. Camp is my happy place, and I am so very grateful for the opportunity to paint for these organizations.
My illustrative style formed slowly, merging with my humor and storytelling, and evolved through these commissions. Cook Children’s Medical Center would request a jungle or an ocean painting, and I’d do the rest. At first, I hid symbols throughout the paintings, such as the shape of Texas, hearts, animal prints, etc. This evolved into painting animals in their natural habitat, doing unnatural things. Farm animals, for example, crowded together for a selfie, with angry chicks who are the only ones to realize the ants are stealing their food.
And though I paint primarily with acrylics, I’ve found a passion for digital illustration, acrylic ink, and writing. In 2020, I finally joined social media and self-published my first novel, Along the River of Zurisees.
My intention is to create art that sparks joy and encourages imagination and creativity. And my goal is for the viewer to stop for a second glance and wonder what is happening in that painting?
