Years ago, an idea for a story took hold and would not let go. It began as a tale of a brother whose sister had epilepsy, set in a children’s hospital. However, I wanted to convey the emotional experience from a sibling’s point of view.
After camping in the mountains with my sister, I wondered if I could create it as an adventure, in a world where hospitals and diagnoses didn’t exist.
And so, it began. I drew a map of the brain and transformed it into a world of forests, mountains, and deserts along a river. Then I created anagrams of words relating to epilepsy and the brain, such as seizure, convulsion, aphasia, cognition, and cerebellum. I scrambled them over and over until finally Pipsy Lee,Gnoctinio, Zurisees, and so many others came into being. Using ancient beliefs and superstitions about epilepsy from long ago, the story came to life.
I hope you enjoy the adventure as much as I did while writing it. And give my best to the Seer, the dwarf, and the centaur, will you? Especially Bacchus. He was an absolute joy to write.
Happy Reading,
Veronica
